Caregiver for older people: frequently asked questions

A caregiver looks after older or dependent people: personal hygiene, prescribed medication, companionship, mobility and meals. It is a job of presence and consistency, not professional healthcare, and the duties are agreed in writing in the contract. Continuous personal care usually requires an employment contract with Social Security registration.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire a caregiver for an older person?

Registration is free and payment is a one-off, when you unlock contact details: Basic €35 (3 profiles), Active search €59 (7) and Professional €108 (15), VAT included and no subscription. Unlocked profiles remain accessible for 30 days. The carer's salary is agreed separately in the contract.

What does a caregiver earn per month or per hour?

Pay can never fall below the SMI: €1,221 gross per month across 14 payments in 2026, and in part-time the hourly rate pro rata of the hours worked. Continuous care with nights or a live-in arrangement is paid above that floor, depending on the level of dependency and presence hours. The platform does not set the salary: it puts you in touch and supports the contract.

What duties does a caregiver take on?

Care for older or dependent people: personal hygiene, prescribed medication, companionship, mobility and meals. It is not professional healthcare: dressings, catheters or physiotherapy are outside the role and need health professionals. Before hiring, describe the level of dependency, whether the person must be moved and which nights need cover.

Is a contract and Social Security required?

Continuous personal care usually requires an employment contract with Social Security registration; home-help services have their own framework. The special household scheme is governed by Royal Decree 1620/2011. Administration of the contract and registration is included in the plan you buy.

Can I hire a caregiver with no experience?

We set no minimum number of years, but in dependency care experience shows from day one: moving a person, preventing falls, medication routines. Each profile states its experience and the 20-question test scores it from 0 to 100. Light companionship suits someone with a shorter track record; high dependency calls for specific training and references.

Does the caregiver need to speak Spanish?

Every profile lists its languages and the catalogue can filter by them; we do not require an official level. With an older person, conversation is part of the care, so conversational Spanish is essential in practice. If your relative speaks another language or has cognitive decline, check it in the interview.

How do you verify a caregiver's documents?

We check ID or passport, background and references from previous employers before publishing the profile. The candidate records a video presentation of up to 2 minutes and takes the 20-question professional test — 10 on experience, 10 on psychological profile. Contact details are opened from the employer dashboard according to the plan.

Can the caregiver live in the house?

Yes. Live-in means she lives with the family, with a room, meals and at least 10 hours of uninterrupted night rest. Presence hours cannot exceed 20 hours a week and are paid as ordinary hours. Active night care has to be planned and paid in the contract.

How long does it take to find a caregiver?

We promise no deadline in days: the catalogue opens when payment is confirmed and new profiles appear after verification. Access lasts 30 days, time to interview several candidates and decide calmly. In urgent cases many families start with a few hours a day and extend once they see how the person responds.

What if the caregiver is not the right fit?

You can open another profile within the same plan — 3, 7 or 15 unlocks depending on what you bought — without paying again. With older people the prudent path is to start with a few hours and extend later, and to write down what has been agreed. There is no subscription: the payment is one-off and does not renew itself.
