SMI 2026: new minimum wage — SPECTRUM DOMUS
SMI 2026: Government approves minimum wage increase
The Spanish government has officially approved the increase of the Salario Mínimo Interprofesional (SMI) for 2026. The new minimum wage stands at €1,184 per month across 14 payments (or €1,134.71 across 12 payments). For part-time domestic staff, the minimum hourly rate is €8.87. This rise directly affects all domestic employers in Andalusia.
What it means for domestic staff employers
All employment contracts with domestic workers must be updated to reflect the new SMI. If your housekeeper, nanny, or gardener earns below the new minimum, you are legally required to raise their pay. Non-compliance carries penalties from the Labour Inspectorate. Read more in «Employment contracts for domestic staff».
Deadlines and update procedure
Employers must update contracts by the end of July 2026. The change is formalised via an addendum to the existing contract or a new agreement. Spectrum Domus provides a salary calculator to quickly compute new rates including all contributions and deductions.
Impact on Social Security contributions
The SMI increase automatically raises the minimum contribution base, and therefore monthly contribution amounts. Current contribution rates and employer bonuses are detailed in «Social Security contributions». We recommend recalculating your budget with the new figures.
